1. Sandals South Coast – Jamaica
On the untouched South Coast of Jamaica, Sandals South Coast is a 50-acre seaside resort within a 500-acre reserve. It is in a rather isolated location and so your vacation will be primarily limited to the expansive resort grounds. Formerly, Sandals Whitehouse, it is now Sandals South Coast.
Traveler Reviews – Sandals South Coast
This is the Sandals Resort for you if:
- You want a large resort with plenty of entertainment and lots of restaurant choices
- You want a beach in Jamaica without vendors trying to sell you stuff
- You don’t want to leave the resort and explore the island
This probably is not the resort for you if:
- You want clear, blue water that does not have seaweed
- You don’t want a 1.5 hour bumpy ride from the airport to the resort
- You want something intimate or you don’t like walking
What people love about Sandals South Coast:
- The South Coast resort has an excellent beach that is notably private
- Great selection of pools – The French pool is very large with a large swim up bar.
- Spectacular views
- The Staff are awesome! Everyone goes out of their way to greet you and to ensure that you are having a great time.
- The Rooms are well appointed, clean, and the beds are comfy. All of the rooms have an ocean view.
- There are three pools. The French Pool is the most active, volley ball, etc. The Italian pool is the largest with floats you can lounge on. There is also a swim up bar that is a lot of fun.
- The Beach is beautiful. You can walk either direction without seeing anyone.
- There are plenty of beach and pool lounge chairs available.
- The water sports are a lot of fun with a very helpful water sports team at your service. Kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, snorkeling, big tube floats are all available.
- The Red Line Spa is incredible. The spa offers several different services. There is a complimentary steam room, sauna, hot tub, plunge pool, and refreshments. The spa facility is beautiful and relaxing.
- The gym and fitness center is very good for a resort.
- Nightly entertainment is amazing. The variety shows, talent shows and games are very enjoyable. There is something different every night.
- The Grounds are immaculate and beautifully maintained. The garden tour is phenomenal.
The common negative reviews about Sandals South Coast:
- The ride from the airport takes approximately 90 minutes. The roads are curvy and bumpy at times. If you have a tendency to get motion sickness you may want to take something for nausea and sit in the front of the van.
- The resort is spread out. Be prepared to walk.
- Dining can become a two hour affair. You are on island time.
- Seaweed is excessive at times. The beaches are raked and cleaned daily.
- The ocean floor is rocky and there is the occasional sea urchin. Water shoes are recommended.
- Many guests have mentioned that the ocean is a little murky.
- The no-see-ums and mosquitos come out toward the evening. Bring bug spray.
- The gift shop is a bit over priced for simple things.
- Wi Fi can be hit or miss.
- There isn’t much to do nearby the resort
- There can be very long waits at the restaurants
- The snorkeling is average at best
Other considerations:
- Sandals has an arrival lounge at the airport. Their goal is that you will not wait in the lounge for more than 15-20 minutes before being taken to the resort. However, there is no departure lounge for Sandals. Guests recommend Club MoBay. You are fast tracked through immigration, and their guest lounge is available to you with food and drinks provided.
- There is a newsletter every night of what activities are going on the next day so you can plan your day accordingly.
- The resort’s location is remote. If you are looking to party and shop with the locals. This may not be the place for you. It basically sets alone on a beautiful quiet beach. You will not hear any traffic or planes overhead.
- Review the resort map before you decide which area to stay in. Close to the large pool or small pool, close to the dining, etc.
- If you are looking for a relaxing, beautiful island atmosphere with something for everyone, this may be the place for you.
- Most feel the rooms are excellent, but not all rooms have the same quality view, and some guests are expecting larger rooms
2. Sandals LaSource – Grenada
Opened in December 2013, the resort has been rebuilt from the ground up. The original LaSource 100 room resort (now known as Pink Gin) has been completely renovated and an additional 125 rooms have been added. In addition to Pink Gin, there are 2 additional “villages” – South Seas and Italian Village. The resort is best known for the immaculate grounds, the crystal clear water and the many pool-equipped rooms. This is not one of the biggest Sandals resorts, but it is certainly one of the best.

- The travel to Grenada can be lengthy (there are not a lot of direct flights), but the airport is very close by – 5 minutes
- Some travelers mention that there is limited evening entertainment compared with other Sandals resorts
- Grenada is in the southern Caribbean so it is warmer than the resorts in the Bahamas and Jamaica in winter
Common complaints about Sandals Grenada
- There are a lot of mosquitos on the beach at dusk. Bring Bug Spray!
- Even though the resort is on a smaller scale and everything is within easy walking distance, there are hills to climb. If mobility is a problem, this may not be the resort for you.
- The Dress Code at Butch’s is strictly enforced. No open toed shoes allowed for either men or women. Opened toed sandals can not be worn no matter how nice they are.
- The private pools are a bit chilly at night. They are not heated.
- The Butlers reserve Sun Beds early in the morning for their guests, even though the guest may not use them all day. This is very irritating to the non Butler guests.
- In some rooms there is no privacy in the vanity and shower area of the room because there is no bathroom door.
Other considerations for Sandals Grenada

- There is a weekly schedule available with all the daily activities listed.
- There is a beautiful pond by the lobby with koi and other fish that is lovely.

8. Sandals Royal Bahamian
Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island is just 40 minutes from Miami. This Sandals resort is often touted as the best in the Sandals chain. It features two separate buildings. The Balmoral Tower and the Windsor building. There is definitely a visual difference between these two buildings both inside and out. Both towers have been recently updated.
Here’s what Sandals says about the resort:
If you’re looking for a regal retreat that lets you vacation at two resorts in one trip: a sophisticated European resort that is steeped in history, and the adventure of an exotic offshore island that includes every amenity imaginable, Sandals Royal Bahamian is for you.
In addition to the two buildings each with large pools with swim up bars, this resort offers the unique experience of an offshore island. The island is about a mile off shore and there are hourly trips to and from the island. The island is not entirely owned by Sandals, but you can hardly notice that once you arrive. It also has a small pool with a swim-up bar. If you want a quiet and secluded experience, the island is not to be missed.

- Sandals Royal Caribbean is a wonderful place for a wedding. The wedding planners handle everything. They go above and beyond to make your day special.
Most of the reviews are positive, but when people complain they say this:
- The beach is smaller than guests were expecting.
- Airplanes frequently fly overhead (not during sleeping hours) and are noisy.
- The rooms and bathrooms could be updated. Some guests felt that furnishings/décor seemed dated.
- Beach and pool loungers are all reserved by 7:30 am, which made it difficult for non-butler guests to find chairs if they didn’t wake up early.
- Local vendors on the beach trying to sell you things can be annoying when you’re trying to relax.
- If you leave windows/ doors open to your room, mosquitos and bugs will get inside.
- Some guests felt that the private island wasn’t too special and it seemed crowded. A few guests mentioned they wished the private island had more food options than just the Jerk Shack.
- Some of the crystal lagoon rooms have an obstructed view due to large vegetation.
- Guests stated that the bathroom floors in some of the rooms flood when you take a shower.
- The fitness center is a little dated and needs its equipment updated.
- You have to ask for premium brand alcohol when they make your drinks.
- Some guests said that the restaurants seemed too loud – couldn’t hear their own conversation.
- Photo packages are too expensive.
- Even though Sandals doesn’t allow tipping, there were a few staff members that hinted strongly for tips and it made some guests uncomfortable.
Other considerations:
- Upon arrival, you’ll proceed to the Sandals desk or lounge, conveniently located at Sangster International Airport, just 10 minutes away from the resort. Your complimentary transfer to and from the resort will be arranged by Sandals.
- Note: A departure tax is to be paid in cash upon leaving the airport if not included in airline ticket.

- There are 8 restaurants at Sandals Royal Caribbean and 15 additional options at nearby resorts. Reservations are required for: Royal Thai, Le Jardinier (Royal Caribbean); Oleander Room, Cucina Romana, Butch’s (Montego Bay); Carlyle (Sandals Inn). - Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort & Private Island has a gift shop with souvenirs, perfume, tobacco and sundries. Duty-free shopping is available on all islands and at the airport.
Located in Montego Bay, Sandals Inn is the smallest of the Sandals resorts with only 52 rooms. This resort is a good way to get the Sandals experience without the big price tag – especially if you utilize the nearby Sandals resorts.
Common Questions:
People often ask, which Sandals is the best for Kids? Well, Sandals resorts do not allow kids, but Beaches Resorts (by Sandals) is a family focused resort.

It might be necessary to upgrade Sandals Royal Caribbean a little bit…as they have added the wonderful Over-Water-Bungalows.
I have not stayed at these as of yet, but i have spoken with someone who has, and they say that it is a once in a lifetime experience.
This is my plan for my 50th birthday gift to myself in 2 years.

My wife and I have been going to Sandals in Jamaica for 11 years straight – soon to be 12. We have stayed at or visited all of the Sandals brand resorts. (Stayed: SRC, Negril, Ochi Rios, Whitehouse. Visited: Carlisle, Dunns River (now closed), Montego Bay.) SRC (Sandals Royal Caribbean) was our first and we have stayed there every year until now, plus one or two other resorts each year (in combined trips – we live in Pacific NW USA, it’s a long way to go twice a year). The descriptions and comments on here a generally speaking very accurate. Notable exceptions are for SRC. SRC is no longer our favorite for a number of reasons. It is small and now very cramped – they could not shoe horn anything else in there now if they tried. The only open space left now is the “croquet lawn” and it’s pretty small. Kind of a rat maze between the buildings, though they do a reasonable job of making it appear less so and retain a romantic-ish atmosphere. Butler service here is VERY hit and MISS – also less useful than at any other sandals since it’s so small and compact. Currently (2016- 2017) there is a lot of construction due to the new obscenely overpriced over water suites and acquisition of the old “soccer field” (patch of dirt) behind the manager’s cottage – all of which is being leveled for expansion (read noisy construction for the next however many months). The majority we spoke with say the over water suites are ridiculous and out of keeping with the tiny cramped resort. The island is getting a much needed complete refurb. The CO beach on the island is has been ruined due to the construction and in spite of management promises will probably go away eventually. They “claimed” they had no idea how many guests only go there for the CO beach until they were inundated with complaints – sure! – well I personally know of at least a dozen who will not be going there again, including us! They did try to temporarily fix it a bit, but it’s not the same and very very small now. Note that other than the Royal Thai on the island (roof but no walls) there is really only one true indoor restaurant, the Regency (other than eating in the pub). All the others are in fact outdoor terraces with just chairs and tables. (The Tea Room is just an under c0ver area on the main walkway through the resort). The French restaurant needs a lot of work and is getting very tired. It “feels” indoors-ish due to the big old vines growing over it, but these days they tend to drop dead leaves and stuff and need to go away. If it rains there is a lot of improvisation to get diners under cover. Like I said, it used to be our favorite, but no longer. Sandals is good but seems to be going downhill gradually over our 11 years. We are planing on giving them a miss in 2018 and trying Couples instead. One thing they really need to do is finally quit with the stupid “original price/65% discount” marketing crap that no one in their right mind believes. (And BTW the new over water suites can’t possibly have an “original price” of $60,000 a week (that’s not misprint), since they have NEVER advertised them in fact above $22,500 (also not a misprint). I am frankly surprised they have never been sued for false advertising practices – no one in the entire history of Sandals has ever paid the “original price”, because it’s fiction. It’s tolerable as long as you are not fooled by it, but it’s just pathetic, stupid and tiresome – they are better that, have some pride, give it up, just be honest. All that being said, I’m not bashing them. They do provide a great vacation experience in general. Anyone who says the food is terrible or any other consistent complaints about quality of anything is an idiot, professional whiner (you know the type), or working for the competition. We have spent 117 nights at various Sandals over 11 years (soon to be 127) and frankly over all you can’t really beat it without paying a whole lot more money (over water suites excepted). I just felt that as something of a Sandals expert, few things needed to be mentioned in the interests of reality and full disclosure.

We visited Sandals Barbados in 2015, some of the negatives I can see, the butlers reserving chairs that are never used is very unfair. Other chairs that are not butlers were cleared after an hour of non use though. Barbados is gorgeous and the food was excellent, butch’s do a great steak. The staff in the Merry Monkey are great and its a nice cool place to hang out if your over heated.
We staying in the crystal lagoon room and its stunning. Its a small resort yes, but its expanding hopefully with more pools. We are hoping to visit Grenada this year.

Just returned from our first Sandals trip at St. Lucia Regency La Toc. The reviews for that resort weren’t really what we experienced. We stayed in the Sunset Bluff Suite and have a butler. Our butler service was FANTASTIC from the second we got there to the time we left. The food was great – Especially at the French restaurant – La Toc. Armondo’s Italian restaurant was not as good we would have liked. Yes, there are some stray cats but they are very friendly and cute. The beach is beautiful, the pools are great! There are 3 pools total (unless you had your own at your room) The main pool at the Pavilion was great and right on the beach. The pool at the bluff is also great with spectacular views of the ocean on a cliff. If you want peace and quiet, there is a pool just for that, called the “Quiet Pool” which also has ocean views, an outdoor shower and walkway to the beach. My husband and I are 26/27 years old and the majority of couples there were our age. Not sure if it was the timing of the year (November) or what but the majority of people there were very young (20s & 30s). I loved being able to go to and from the other 2 resorts on the island. The Grande was great too!
Things to be wary of: Pricing on gifts (t-shirts, alcohol, flags, jewelry, clothes, etc are pricey) Plan to bring sunblock with you otherwise you’ll be paying $30 for a bottle that may not last you the whole time. Yes, the ride to and from the airport is about an hour to an hour and a half on a windy hilly semi-bumpy road but its beautiful and scenic and saves you money in the long run. If you prefer, you can book a helicopter shuttle to and from the airports (2 airports on island – 1 is the main international airport at the bottom of the island and the other is a small puddle jumper airport located by all 3 resorts). The helicopter shuttle is about $165/person and you have to make reservations for it online. Just google it. My husband and i planned to do it but ended up spending more at the resort on tours, gifts, etc. and decided the ride back wasn’t that bad, which it wasn’t..
Butler Service: It’s worth it at least once, especially if you’ve never been before. The butlers are very knowledgable, friendly and willing to go above and beyond to make sure your happy. If you want to eat while at the pool, you don’t have to put your cover-up on and put your stuff away to go do that. You just call your butler on the cell phone they give you and place your order with them. They will bring you food, drinks, anything you need/want. Make sure to tip your butlers at the end of your trip unless you plan to tip them by day. And as far as I know they only take tips in cash so please bring that. We had 2 butlers (they work in shifts) and both were fabulous! some days we had fill-in butlers who were also amazing! We tipped our fill-ins that day because they would not be filling in again and we didn’t want to forget.
Tours: We did the Joe Knows Tour which was awesome! You leave the lobby around 9am and go to the port in Castries, get on a speed boat with about 12-14 other people. From there you go down the island to Soufreiere where you will see the beautiful and amazing Pitons. From there you will go to the mud bath and bathe in the volcano then wash off in the warm volcano water. Then you will go finish washing off at a beautiful waterfall. After the waterfall you go eat a Creole lunch overlooking the beautiful water and the Pitons. After lunch, you get back on the boat and they show you some areas off the island as you pass by them then you go snorkeling for about 45 minutes in beautiful clear waters. I am afraid of anything living in the ocean and yes I did this and it was fun and cool. You are served beer and their famous rum punch on the boat as well and your tour guides do take cash tips at the end. The ride back is about 10 minutes.
Off the resort: The island is pretty safe and I would highly recommend you leave and go eat dinner at The Coal Pot restaurant which is right on the water. It is absolutely delicious and you can see so many cool fish and other creatures while dining on the water. We saw a pufferfish, some lobster, and other fish just hanging out. The prices seem high when you get there but that is because they are in EU currency. You won’t be paying near $400 like you think. It will be like $127 total and the food is prepared from a French chef who makes amazing food!! If you do go, have the front desk or your butler reserve a taxi for you. Just call the restaurant and make a reservation. The staff at the restaurant are very friendly too.
I would highly recommend Sandals Regency La Toc to anyone. The landscape is lush, tropical and beautiful. The resort is on a hill so the rooms/villages and restaurants are all spread out (making you have to exercise or ride around in a golf cart with your butler fun). If you’re not please try to see if they will switch you to the Grande or Halycon, also Sandals resorts on the Island.

My wife and I have been to Sandals twice. Both times we have been to Grand Riviera also know as Ocho Rios and now Ochi. Don’t know why they keep changing the names. Anyways we both had a wonderful time and were treated like royalty. The resort was always very clean, rooms were good. We stayed on the ocean side, never was bored. The food was good, the only thing I wished for was bigger portions at some of the restaurant’s. We were there in 2010 as well as 2014. The reason we went back was there was a lot of remodeling going on in 2010 that we wanted to see if completed. We are actually going on our 3rd Sandals trip in the next 10 days. We will be going to Sandals Halcyon in St Lucia. Hoping that we have just as good of a time in St Lucia as we did in Jamaica.

We went to Sandals Royal Bahamian for our honeymoon we had the butler service and it couldn’t have been more perfect!! Everyone was so nice and really catered to whatever you needed or wanted!! I would go back in a heartbeat we loved the small island you could go to throughout the day! Sea turtles were so cool to see when snorkeling! We are planning to go to another sandals for our one year anniversary just trying to decide which one is the hard part as I’m sure they are all nice!! If you go to the royal Bahamian the island world tour is a must in my book!! Expensive yes but worth every penny as you will see very breathtaking views! Explore the island to the top when you go 360 view of nothing but clear waters! I’m still dreaming of my honeymoon it was that great! Ooh and I had a new favorite drink after leaving “the hummingbird” so yummy!!

Appreciate the list and agree, it’s fairly accurate. We’ve been to Ocho Rios (before the reno), La Toc and Whitehouse, plus as Canadians to the Royal Hicaccos in Cuba when it was a cousin of the chain (not any more).
Biggest issues we’ve encountered (twice) was when the resorts were preparing to receive travel agents in mass for publication review time. Guest service really dropped off to make them happy, and when speaking with a few of the agents in the pool, they were instructed NOT to speak with guests directly regarding the resort.
We are evaluating for our next trip in Jan ’16, to which Sandals to visit. Thanks again for this list, it really does help.
Next thing you could do is post a similar comparison list on resort chains, services & AI offerings as Sandals seems to be out of date with their pricing vs the “Luxury is included” packages.

Interesting, but like it says different strokes for different folks. Went to RC and had a fabulous time, staff was awesome, food was great and drinks were plentiful and great. Entertainment was good and plentiful. We did the island routes tour of Dunn’s river and the zip line, bob sled, tram combo, enjoyed it. We heard some people complaining about things, but for us, leave the wallet in the room and just head out was so refreshing, nothing to carry. Headed to Antigua next, although it’s hard not to go right back to RC but we are going to force ourselves to try another Sandals. 🙂

This website is absolutely one of the best I’ve seen for reviewing resorts! We used this to pick our honeymoon destination and decided on Sandals Whitehouse, Jamaica! We seriously have NO complaints about this resort! We fell in love with it the moment we got there and I cried when we left!
It is literally exactly like the pictures on their website, and the staff were the friendliest people I have ever encountered! We felt so relaxed, and welcomed, and truly enjoyed our experience.
And even though the official Sandals website is true to the pictures and provides a lot of information, this website was fantastic for finding those little tidbits that only customers can/will tell you about. I appreciated the list of upsides/downsides. It definitely made it an easy choice!
We do want to go back and/or visit other resorts and will be using this website to help plan our next vacation!!

We just returned from Sandals due to our oldest daughter getting married. What a ride! The best trip ever. The wedding was a fairy tail. Guest service was outstanding, rooms always clean, the staff was very nice. There were always something going on. The food great, activities plentiful. All the activities kept us going. The place to eat of choice was Bayside!!! Thanks a million to Chantelle for a job well done on the wedding. Would go back in a minute.

Just returned from Grande Antigua and WILL RETURN as soon as we can (afford it!). WE GOT MARRIED THERE! The review of the resort seems fairly accurate – we stayed on the Med. side and it was much ‘newer’ structurally than the Caribbean side. I want to stress how BREATHTAKING the landscaping and gardening is on the resort, you feel as though you’ve died and gone to heaven, especially the Caribbean side. To me, my wedding photos are worth the price of the vacation alone, that’s how AMAZING they are.
NEVER ate a bad meal (we are meat and seafood eaters, not wimps) – every dinner was three or four courses, never went hungry!! ALSO, can get a big ol’ burger and fries or a couple cheesy pizzas for lunch, just like home 🙂 YUM!
ALWAYS remember to make your dinner reservations, in order to experience all the restuarants available.
NEVER encountered a ‘bad’ employee, nothing out of the ordinary – I planned our wedding there and had no problems, so take it for what it’s worth. All I ever heard was “that’s not a problem” when I asked for things and every employee greets you as you pass them.
The beach is public, I never experienced a problem finding beach chairs – shaded spots were most ALWAYS reserved, but who the heck wants to sit in the shade when it’s 86 degrees and breezy, lather that lotion on and don’t be afraid to get a tan! The ocean cools you down, super calm water, sand not rocks or sea weed beneath your feet. Peddlers ask you if you want to buy things from them, just say no thanks and they walk away. There is a safe in the room, we used it, I didn’t hear anyone complain of theft during our stay.
The ride to/from the airport is about 10 minutes. We ventured off the resort in a rented car, and figured out the roadways pretty easily, went on a private deep sea fishing charter from Nelsons Dockyard (cheaper than the resort, plus ours was private). We researched crime, etc. before traveling to Antigua because we knew we would want to venture off the resort, it was relatively safe there – MUCH SAFER than Jamaica. I’d never leave the resort in a rented car in Jamaica.
I CANNOT believe Grande Antigua was not ranked higher, it was AMAZING. THE END 🙂

Just returned from seven days at the Sandals Grande Riviera and CANNOT wait to go again!!! Great FOOD (Italian…avoid it!), SERVICE (Bishop at the swim up bar says, “Why not!?!” fantastic!), RELAXING!!! Planning to return same time, same resort!

We’ve been to most Sandals resorts…this site is pretty close right on the mark as far as ranking.
